7 First Nation Youth Inquest

Etienne Esquega had the honour of representing the Northern Nishnawbe Education Council ("NNEC") at the 7 First Nation Youth Inquest in Thunder Bay. Six of the seven youth attended Dennis Franklin Cromarty Highschool in Thunder Bay which NNEC operates.

The inquest heard from 146 witnesses and reviewed 186 exhibits.  The inquest started in October of 2015 and completed on June 28, 2016 when the jury rendered their verdict and issued 145 recommendations. This was the longest running First Nation inquest in the province of Ontario.

Etienne Esquega was successful in advocating for a finding of "accident" in the death of Ms. Robyn Harper even though her family had sought a finding of "homicide". Among many other recommendations, Mr. Esquega was notably successful in obtaining a recommendation from the jury for the building of a much needed student residence in Thunder Bay for NNEC community students who unfortunately have to attend Thunder Bay for highschool because there are no highschools in their communities.
